MDR1 gen

30 January, 2018Idalehucova

Our friends the rough collie have a certain reputation for delicate dogs. Nothing further from reality. The collies live a totally normal life and only show sensitivity to certain medications, which we can easily solve by taking care when treating them at the veterinarian or deworming them.

Since the end of the last century scientific studies have been approaching the cause of the problem, reaching in 2001 the discovery of the origin of adverse reactions. This was neither more nor less than a recessive mutation of the MDR1 gene. Being recessive, not all specimens are affected. Thanks to the zeal and care of the breeders, the presence of specimens with this mutation will be reduced over time, although because genetic techniques and analysis are recent additions to the practice of veterinary medicine, there are still many specimens carrying this specific gene.

Here is a list of dangerous drugs for your collie and this link to download that information in PDF format.

It does not hurt to print this sheet to take it in your wallet or give it to your veterinarian (who has to keep it in mind).

This mutation is not only found in dogs of the rough collie race but we can also find it in other breeds of shepherd dogs and hounds:
